Abstract

1,054,294. Welding by fusion. SUPERHEATER CO. Ltd. July 28, 1964 [Aug. 7, 1964], No. 32232/64. Heading B3R. In an arc welding tool for internally butt welding tubular members in which the tool is inserted into one of the members to position the tip of a non-consumable electrode in the plane of the joint, the current supply path to the electrode passes through a helical coil adjacent the electrode. The use of such a coil prevents deflection of the arc due to the magnetic field set up by the welding current. A water-cooled tool has a transverse tungsten electrode 3, Fig. 2 (not shown), clamped in a block 2 to which current is fed from the water inlet 12 through a tube 5 and a coil 6. A sleeve 6A round the coil 6 enables the coil to serve as a water passage. The water passes through an aperture 15 adjacent the block 2 to an outlet 13 through a concentric outer tube 1. Argon is fed through a central tube 10 to a passage 11 in the block 2. Discs 15, 16 on either side of the electrode 3 locate the tool centrally and limit the loss of argon. The tubes B, C are rotated during welding. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tubes are fixed and the part of the tool inserted in the tubes is rotated by a motor. Gas or liquid may be used for cooling. The tool may be used for welding tubes to a tube plate.
