Abstract
1,054,197. Centrifugal separators. TURBO-SEPARATOR A. G. WATTWIL. June 18, 1964 [June 25, 1963], No. 25329/64. Heading B2P. In a centrifuge comrising a rotary drum 12 liquid to be clarified is supplied to the drum through a tubular member 22 to form a liquid layer on the inner surface of a wall 12a of the drum during rotation thereof, and one or more removal devices 26. 27 are mounted for movement in a radial direction with respect to the liquid layer, so that, during rotation of the drum, one or more predetermined constituents can be selectively withdrawn from the liquid layer. A channel 19 having an outlet 20 is provided in the centrifuge housing 18 for the discharge of purified liquid. The tubular member 22 is provided with a supply nozzle or pipe 23 and is mounted in an opening in the housing cover 21. Stabilizing vanes 14 carrying a separating ring 15 are secured to the bottom of the drum 12. The removal devices consist of tube bends 26. 27 pivotably mounted in support rings 24, 25 in the cover 21 and provided with nozzles 28, 29 at their ends. The tube bends 26, 27 are actuated by arms 30, 31 cooperating with stop brackets 32, 33. The bracket 32 having a latch 34 to retain the arm 30 in its normal position. A transparent pipe 35 connects the tube bend 26 to a conduit 37 opening in the channel 19 and conduit 38 extends from the tube bend 27 to a sediment or sludge container. In operation, the tube bends 26, 27 are initially located as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. Clarified liquid is removed through the bend 26 while liquid to be clarified is continuously fed through the tubular member 22 and under the ring 15 with the drum rotating continuously. When sufficient sludge has accumulated in the outer region of the liquid layer the supply of liquid to be clarified is interrupted and the tube bend 26 is displaced radially outwardly until all clarified liquid is removed, as can be ascertained when discoloured liquid starts flowing through the transparent pipe 35. The tube bend 26 is then retracted to its innermost position 26a and the tube bend 27 is pivoted outwardly until it reaches position 27a when it will have removed practically all the sludge. The tube bends are then returned to their initial position and the supply of liquid to be clarified resumed. In la modification the drum has a conical outer wall with its wider end at the top and there is provided a single removal tube bend which is connected alternatively to clarified liquid and sludge discharge conduits by means of a selector valve. Automatic operation may be obtained by means of a time switch 50 which controls the supply of liquid to be clarified and adjusts the tube bends 26. 27 Fig. 1, or, in the case of the modified embodiment adjusts the single tube bend and controls the operation of the selector valve.
