Item codes corresponding to retail goods are stored with associated prices on a magnetic drum 51 for successive comparison with manually registered item codes at 54 whereby the prices are extracted and summed for a receipt printed at 56. Several registration keyboards are successively scanned, for comparison with the stored codes. The price may be multiplied by the number of corresponding items before print out. To provide a continuous inventory the number of each item is previously recorded and the number purchased subtracted therefrom. Fresh codes and prices or revised prices may be written on the drum. Coincidence of a code registered at 54 with that read by reading heads 72 operates AND gates 74, 76, 77, 82, 83, 84 such that with switch 102 in the read position, flip-flop 96 is set, hence de-energizing flip-flop 94 which previously changed continuously according to the price read by heads 72 and the then present price is recorded by a printer 56 together with the item code from the register 54. In order to record information switches 102, 103, 104 are set to the write position, a code is set on register 54 and a price on register 57. If no coincident code is found on the drum a row of logical " ones " is located to energize gates 82, 83, 84 and with switch 102 in the " write " position a counter 63 is energized such that after counting the number of rows through head 72 corresponding to the distance between the reading and writing heads 72, 71 the writing heads 71 are energized to write the code and price. A revolution reading head 72 resets flip-flops 106, 107, 109, 110 for comparison of the code next registered at 54. A letter or decimal code is converted into binary form using a matrix.
