Abstract

[Also in Division D2] In a method of recovering fibres from the waste water of papermaking apparatus starch is added to the waste water to act as a flocculating agent. As described starch, which is swollen by an alkali - for example sodium hydroxide-with the swelling stopped by a buffering agent-for example sodium silicate and'or aluminium sulphate-is added to the waste water in vessel 1 or earlier. The agglomerated fibres are picked up in a flotation chamber 2 by suction head 7 which is rotated by motor 10. Instead of using the suction head air may be injected either into the waste water, or, during the swelling of the starch, into the mixture of starch and water to cause air bubbles to adhere to the starch particles.
