Abstract

In a balked frictionally synchronized clutch, shown as a double clutch for selectively connecting change-speed gears 2, 3 to a shaft 1, the preset, balk and synchronizer functions are performed by elements which only become operative for performing their particular function. Dog teeth 10 on the gear 2 are clutched by splines 9 in a sliding dog sleeve 8 splined to a hub 4 fast on the shaft 1. A balk ring 12 has three internal radial lugs 16 engaging with lostmotion 25, axial slots 17 in the gear 2, and compression coil springs 22 load the balk-ring 12 axially right so that, in the neutral position, when it is out of contact with the dog sleeve 8 the end face 19 of the ring is in frictional contact with the end face 20 of the shaft hub 4 so that relative rotation between the gear and shaft sets the lugs 16 to the appropriate circumferential end of the slots 17 whereby pointed teeth 18 on the ring are registered with pointed ends of the dog teeth 10, but axially spaced 26 therefrom in a position pre-set for balking. Leftward engaging movement of the dog sleeve 8 engages coned surfaces 15 on the sleeve 8 and ring 12, taking the ring left to absorb the axial spacing 26 and bring the ends of the teeth 18 into balk contact with the teeth 10, at the same time separating the end face 19 of the balk ring 12 from the face 20 of the shaft hub 4, so that these pre-set surfaces are no longer operative. Rightward axial reaction on the ring 12 is now taken in part by frictional engagement between the side faces of the ring lugs 16 and the slots 17 under synchronizing torque. On synchronism these side faces separate permitting the lugs 16 to centralize in the slots 17 as the teeth 18 followed by the sleeve teeth 9, move into full engagement with the teeth 10.
