[Also in Division C7] In a plating apparatus comprising baths arranged to define a closed circuit treatment path and a guide rail following that path and adapted to support carriers for articles to be treated as they are moved along the path, the guide rail being formed to include section capable of individual vertical displacement s that when the movable sections are raised they define a continuous element extending along the treatment path and when they are lowered they interrupt the continuous element, the carriers are arms 12 pivotally carried by a travelling element, such as endless roller chain 18, for movement along the treatment path, e.g. by means of chain guide 27, and extending transversely of the guide rail 22 and the baths 10. The vertical movement of the movable sections of rail 22 is effected by pneumatic cylinders 25 which are exhausted directly or indirectly into the baths to effect agitation and are so operated when it is desired to lower articles to be treated into a desired bath, the chain being moved intermittently and arrested during vertical movement of the carrier arms and whenever a carrier arrives at a single treatment bath or at the end of a long one. As described the plating is effected electrolytically, the carrier arms supporting racks 20 bearing the articles to be plated and being connected into an electrical plating circuit at least in their lowered position. The baths comprise copper, nickel, chromium, and brass plating solutions separated by acid treatment and rinsing tanks. Sections of the guide rail located at loading and unloading stations are fixed.
