Abstract
1,053,461. Statistical and wagering apparatus. A. CARRUS. Feb. 18, 1964 [Feb. 18, 1963], No. 6749/64. Headings G4A and G4M. A card for making bets, e.g. on a horse race, has zones 7-10, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which a bet is recorded by making notches or other marks. The numbers in zone 8 represent horses, G and P in zone 7 represent " win " and " place ", J and C in zone 9 represent " double " and " field " bets and zone 10 represents " triple " bets. A suitably marked card is inserted in a machine which checks the correctness of a bet, stamps and punches information on the card if correct so as to authenticate it, returns the card to the better and transmits the appropriate information to a central station at which the odds are calculated when the race has been run. Winning authenticated cards may be inserted in machines which are arranged to issue the appropriate amount of money. The stake money may be paid when the card is placed in the firstmentioned machine. Bets may be entered on cards by a keyboard arranged to record the information on a blank card obtained from a continuous reel in the machine, the card being checked and authenticated before it is issued to the better and the bet being registered during the card checking operation. Apparatus for sensing an edge-notched card of the type shown in Fig. 2 comprises contact pins 35, Fig. 12, arranged in rows on either side of a driving band 14. A contact pin 41 determines whether the card has been correctly inserted, corner 2, Fig. 1 (not shown), of the card being cut off. If the card is inserted backwards, none of pins 35 make contact owing to the asymmetric arrangement of the index positions with respect to the leading and trailing ends of the card.
