Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5, B8 and C3] To prevent bubbles forming in viscous liquids such as jams packed under reduced pressure in containers of thermoplastic resins the gas sorbed in the resin is reduced to less than 0.05 c.c. per gram of resin. The container may be formed by conventional moulding or fabricating procedures, and the sorbed gas subsequently released by prolonged heating, by prolonged exposure to reduced pressure, or by ultrasonic treatment which may be applied in a hot water bath. Alternatively the container may be injection moulded with vacuum connections either to the mould or to the supply hopper containing the resin granules. The container may also be formed from extruded sheet produced in a machine in which a reduced pressure is applied to the later stages of the feed screw feeding the resin. The invention is particularly applicable to containers comprising at least 60% by weight of polystyrene or of other alkenyl aromatic compounds. The reduced pressure in the container may be obtained by sealing it while the contents are hot. The container may be degassed after filling, while the contents are still hot, or even after sealing.
