Abstract
1,053,002. Electrostatic generators. P. REUSSER. Jan. 20, 1965., No. 2569/65. Heading H2A. In an electrostatic generator of the rotating insulating charge-carrier type, field uniformity is achieved without the use of a semi-conducting layer on the stator, by suitably spacing the electrodes. In the form shown, the spacing of electrodes 31, 35 is 1À25-6À8 (preferably 2À44) times their cross-sectional diameter. The charge-carrier 33 is in the form of a cup driven by a motor 17 (Fig. 1, not shown) in the same casing. The base of the cup is in the form of a labyrinth (23, 24) to prevent corona. The low and high voltage electrodes 31, 35 and inductors 39, 40 are mounted in an insulator 25 (Fig. 1) in the base of the casing. The electrodes are solid, polished cylinders of aluminium, steel, carbon &c. or semi-conductive material, and have knife-edges 34, 36 adjacent the charge carrier. The earth-inductors 40 are hollow and contain the casing tie-rods 41 which also serve as low-voltage input leads (via springs 45) to input electrodes 31. The casing may contain hydrogen at 240 1b./in.<SP>2</SP>, or liquid, or vacuum. Fig. 4 (not shown) shows a two-pole machine in which the inner surface of the casing acts as earth inductor. The high voltage inductor 50 is spaced by 0À25-5À8 (preferably 1À6) times its radius. Electrodes and inductors may be interchanged.
