Drawing. - Relates to developments of the machine described in Specification 17602/13 for drawing glass rod and tubing, and comprises primarily a cooling-device which automatically follows the descending level of the molten glass during the drawing process. The glass rod 11 is drawn continuously from a receptacle 12, Fig. 3, by a series of grippers 10, Fig. 2, carried on an endless chain 5<1>. Pins on the grippers engage a chain 23 in passing, and, by means of intermediate linkage, drive a ratchet device 26, which thus feeds the cooling-device 13, Fig. 3, in a downward direction to follow the descent of the glass level. The cooling-device consists of a coiled water-pipe 33 terminating in a ring 31 and surrounded by a shield 36. The jaws of the grippers 10 are pressed into the gripping position by means of pivoted arms on the frame and are retained by latches until these are released for delivery of the glass rod to a receptacle 62. Each gripper 10, as it approaches the top of the drawing-device, engages a cam-surface 54, Fig. 2, on the cutting- device, which is thus swung back about a pivot 49 This movement causes one of the cutters of the cutting-device to swing open in a direction at right-angles to the plane of the paper, in which position it is retained by a catch. Further ascent of the gripper allows the cutting-device to return to the cutting positionwhereupon the gripper displaces a trigger 55 and releases the open cutter, which strikes the glass rod and severs the required length. The severed length is carried to a receptacle 59 provided with two parallel arms 57. The gripping-jaws release the severed length, and the succeeding gripper rotates the chain 23 and causes the arms 57 to swing into an horizontal position and deliver the severed length to the receptacle 62. A pivoted finger on the gripper ensures that the severed length, after release from the grippers, shall fall on the arms 57.
