Abstract

1,052,778. Piston rings; seals. WELLWORTHY Ltd. Nov. 24, 1965 [Dec. 16, 1964], No. 51277/64. Addition to 990,891. Headings F2B and F2T. In a cast iron or steel sealing ring 1 having an annular groove 2 in an end face 3 and an annular groove 4 in a peripheral face 5, at least one of the grooves is filled with a wear-resistant material other than molybdenum or chromium. The piston ring 1 has a groove 2 in each end face 3 which grooves and the groove 4 are filled with wear-resistant material e.g. nickel aluminide, tungsten carbide, chromium oxide, alumina, phosphor bronze, silver, silver alloy or material known under the Registered Trade Marks of " Colmony " or " Stellite." One or more, but not all, of the grooves may be filled with molybdenum and/or chromium. A sealing ring according to the invention may be used between relatively fixed or relatively movable members or as a side face sealing ring.
