1,052,754. Dynamo-electric machines. SOCIETE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM). Aug. 21, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No. 33143/63. Heading H2A. A dynamo-electric machine, e.g. alternator, has a core, e.g. stator, with axial slots through which extend and in which are held by wedges winding conductor bars 8, 9 formed of electrically insulated twisted multiple small diameter high purity wires arranged to form a central longitudinal coolant passage 3, the bars having around them electrical insulation 5, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), and thermal insulation 4 interposed between the bars and insulation 5; the passages 3 are connected to manifolds 14 by electrically insulating tubes 12 having around them thermal insulation 13, and the bars in different slots are formed into the required winding by electrical connections 15 which include sleeves 10 overlying the bar ends. The coolant, produced by a cryogenic apparatus controlled with reference to the winding temperature or current, may be gaseous or liquid, e.g. helium, air, or hydrogen. The bar rigidity may be increased by impregnation with thermohardening resins, and the thermal insulation 4 may be either a sheet or tape wrapping or a double walled tube containing a gas or insulating liquid under pressure. There may be one or two circular, square, or rectangular section bars per slot, and the coolant may flow in either series or parallel through the bars, the inlet and outlet manifolds being at either the same or opposite ends of the machine.
