Abstract

1,052,668. Carbo-nitriding ferrous metals. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 23, 1965 [Dec.4, 1964], No.49431/64. Heading C7U. Ferrous metals are carbo-nitrided at 600‹- 750‹C in a fused salt both containing alkali metal cyanide, cyanate and carbonate, and optionally an alkali metal chloride, the both containing at least 10% of cyanate calculated as NaCNO and being held in a container at least the inner surface of which consists of an alloy steel containing either (a) 12-35% of chromium or (b) 12-18% of chromium together with 4-7% of aluminium or (c) at least 10% of chromium together with at least 6% of nickel, the combined total of nickel and chromium not exceeding 80%. The bath may be electrically heated by immersed electrodes, at least the outer surfaces of which are formed from one of the above alloys.
