Abstract

1,052,571. Casting composite articles; continuous casting, making rods and wire; rolling. NEW YORK WIRE CO. March 17, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 11417/65. Headings B3A, B3F and B3M. In a method of continuous casting lengths of non-ferrous composite material, such as rods or wire comprising a core member and a cladding sheath member, one of the members is continuously formed and while in the intermediate state between liquid and solid the material comprising the other member is simultaneously formed coaxially with the first one member so that the two members unite at their interface to form an integral compound member. During the casting operation an oxide film forms on the surface between the two members which controls the extent to which the member surfaces intermingle. A wheel type continuous casting machine, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), has a moving mould which is formed between blocks 52 mounted on a flexible continuous band 50 and the rim 36 (Fig. 6, not shown) of a wheel 32. Means 66 for simultaneously introducing each of the materials into the mould is in the form of two coaxial cylindrical members. The bore of the inner member effecting the formation of the core member and the external surface of the outer member forming the internal surface of the cladding member. The external shape of the composite article is formed by surface of the mould itself. The rate of flow of the respective molten materials and the movement of the mould are so controlled to ensure the complete filling of the cladding sheath by the core material. The rim of the wheel member 32 is provided with an internal annular passage for cooling fluid and the flexible band 50 and blocks may be cooled by an air blast or spray 64. The external shape of the composite article is determined by the shape of the mould 38, 52 and the shape of the section of the interface between the core and cladding members is effected by the means 66. Alternative forms of the material introducing means 66 are described and shown (see Figs. 14 and 18, not shown). The resulting composite casting may be rolled (see Fig. 1) to produce composite wire or rod of a predetermined size.
