Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A polymeric material containing at least one group of the formula where A is C1 or C 1-4 straight-chain alkoxy, R<SP>1</SP> is aryl, preferably phenyl, R<SP>11</SP> is C1, aryloxy or C 1-6 straight-chain alkoxy, x + y = 2 and y = 1 or 2; when y = 2 both siloxane groups are directly attached to the P atom, is used to prepare heat-stable laminates with e.g. asbestos. The laminate may be prepared by dissolving the polymer above in dimethyl formamide, chlorobenzene or ethanol and this solution evenly dispersed over both sides of an asbestos sheet, the resulting combination being dried at 80‹ C. in an oven. The dried, impregnated sheet may be used as such, or cut into strips. A pile of these strips is placed between two sheets of polythene and compressed cold to ¢-¥ inch thickness, and subsequently cured at 300‹ C. under 1400 1b. inch<SP>2</SP> pressure. The pile of strips is coated with graphite to prevent sticking in the hot press. It is essential to release the pressure two or three times at the start of each curing procedure to allow gases to escape.
