Therapeutic compositions having steroid hormone activity comprise a compound of the formula:- wherein A is (H,H), (H, α-Lower alkyl), (H, #-lower alkyl), lower alkylene, (H, α-hydroxy) or (H, α-acyloxy); B is hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogen; R is hydrogen, lower alkyl or acyl; of- X and Y, X is hydrogen or halogen and Y is a (H,H), Keto, (H, α-OR<SP>1</SP>), (H, #- OR<SP>1</SP>) or (H, #-halogen) R<SP>1</SP> being hydrogen or acyl, whereby X is hydrogen when Y is (H, H) or (H, α-OH), and X is halogen when Y is (H, #-halogen), or X and Y together represent an epoxy grouping or a double bond; and Z is one of the groupings D being hydrogen, lower alkyl, ethinyl, halogeno-ethinyl or alkyl-ethinyl, Q being hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy or halogen, R<SP>11</SP> being hydrogen or acyl and V being hydrogen, hydroxy or acyloxy, in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier. Certain of the compounds have progestational and anti-fertility properties while others have anabolic and anti-inflammatory properties and are employed orally. Compounds having anti-inflammatory activity may, for example be administered in tablets or capsules, syrups, or emulsions intramuscularly in suspension, topically as a cream to which may be added neomycin sulphate, or in opthalmic suspensions or nasal sprays.
