Abstract
1,052,223. Steroids. SCHERICO Ltd. Dec. 20, 1963 [Jan. 16, 1963 (2) ; Sept. 30, 1963], No. 50365/63. Heading C2U. The invention comprises a steroid of the androstane series containing double bonds in positions 1(2) and 5(6) of the ring system and containing a keto group in position 3, a methyl group in position 17α, and a free or esterified group in position 17#, and a process for preparing a 3-keto-1,5-bis-dehydro-steroid, which comprises reacting a 3-keto-1,4-bis-dehydrosteroid having a free hydrogen atom at position 6, with a basic isomerization agent in a solvent which does not give up a proton, with the proviso that when the isomerization agent is an alkali metal alkoxide, the solvent is dialkyl sulphoxide or an N,N-dialkyl alkanoic acid amide. As isomerization agents there may be used an alkali metal acetylide, an alkali metal alkyl substituted acetylide, an alkali metal or an alkaline-earth metal hydride, an alkali metal amide, an alkali metal triphenylmethyl or an alkali metal alkoxide. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally.
