Abstract

1,052,089. Photo-conductive copy sheets. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. July 9, 1964, No. 28454/64. Heading H1K. Photo-conductive copy-sheets of increased spectral sensitivity are obtained by incorporating a 4 - amino - naphthal - 1,8 - imide in the photo-conductive layer of the copysheet. Photoconductors such as ZnO or In 2 O 3 , together with insulating binders such as a butadiene-styrene polymer are ground in toluene and a dispersion of the 4-amino-naphthal-1,8-imide in a solvent such as methanol, dimethyl formamide, toluene, methyl-isobutyl ketone, ethanol or triethylaminea dded thereto. Alternatively, the sensitizer may be added in the solid state and ground in. The composition may be coated on an aluminium foil or aluminium paper laminate. Other sensitizers may also be used, e.g. Patent Blue, Phloxine B and Setoflavine. The 4-aminonaphthal-1,8-imides which are preferably used are those of formula where Z 1 and Z 2 are H or SO 3 M (M being H or a cation such as Na<SP>+</SP> or (C 2 H 5 ) 3 HN<SP>+</SP>); R 1 and R 2 are H, alkyl e.g. CH 3 aryl or aralkyl; Y is H, NH 3 , phenylamino, sulfoethyl, isopropyl, p-tolyl, pyridyl, diethylaminophenyl, 4-hydroxy - 3 - carboxyphenyl, tetradecyl; other substituent groups are also exemplified. The sensitizers may be used in amounts 0À005- 2,000 parts per 40,000 parts of photoconductor. A yellow 4-aminonaphthal-1,8-imide may be used to increase sensitivity to blue light.
