1,051,978. Reprocessing nuclear fuel. JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE. May 6, 1964 [May 22, 1963], No. 18796/64. Heading G6R. Solvent comprising tributyl phosphate which has been used in reprocessing nuclear fuel is purified by contact with an ion exchanger. A polystyrene type strongly basic anion exchange resin removes from the solvent dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and monobutyl phosphate (MBP) and complexes of these compounds with fission products. Alternatively, impurities may be extracted from the solvent with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution which is then treated with the ion exchanger and returned for re-use; the extracted solvent may be further purified in a second ion exchange column. DBP and MBP, but not the fission product complexes, may be removed from the ion exchanger with caustic soda solution.
