Abstract
105,193. Mills, T. J., and Morris, E. T. Aug. 29, 1916. Tripping-arrangements; inking-apparatus; heating and drying apparatus.-Rotary machines, more particularly intaglio-printing machines, have the printing-cylinder mounted in a double structure movable endways on the framing, the rear part being adjustably fixed to the framing, and the front part, which carries the cylinder, being movable against the adjustable pressure of springs between it and the rear part, toggle mechanism for moving the rear part to trip the cylinder, a scraper detachably mounted on the front part, opening bearings for removal of the printing- cylinder, and heated drying-cylinders in the delivery apparatus for drying the printed sheets. As shown, the shaft h of the printing-cylinder b is in bearings i in blocks j mounted to slide on the framing a, and extensions k from the blocks j pass through the rear boxes or blocks m, also mounted to slide on the framing. Compression springs o in the boxes m surround the extensions k, and the blocks are adjusted relatively to the boxes m by nuts n. The boxes m are moved to vary the pressure of the cylinder b against the impression cylinder d by means of screws p passing through screwed projections q of the boxes. Worm-wheels r on the screws p are engaged by worms s on a transverse shaft t provided with a hand-wheel u for operating it to move the boxes at opposite sides of the machine simultaneously. To render the cylinder b removable, the bearings i are made to open so that the cylinder shaft h may be rolled out on ways a<1> on the blocks j, m. The parts i' of the bearings are, for this purpose, hinged at i<2>, and are normally locked in position by bolts i<3>. To permit of the removal of an intaglio cylinder, the scraper v is removably mounted on the blocks j. It is fixed in a clamp w carried on the middle part of a shaft or bar x reciprocated transversely of the machine by a grooved cam y on a shaft z driven by gearing 1 from any suitable part of the machine. The middle part of the bar x is removably attached to the slidable end parts by sockets and locking-pins x<1>, as shown in Fig. 6 The cylinder b is tripped by toggle-links 2, 3, Figs. 1 and 8, connected at 5 to the blocks j, and at 4 to fixed points on the framing. Depending parts or arms 7 of the links 3 are moved by eccentric pins 8 on a transverse shaft 9. On this shaft 9 is a notched disk 10 operated by a pawl 20 on a loose disk 12 having gear teeth engaging a toothed segment 25 pivoted at 27 and operated continuously by a cam 29. The notched disk 10 is normally locked bv a spring-actuated dog 22, and the pawl 20 is held out of operation by a camdisk 11 having an arm 13 connected by links 14, 15, &c. to the pedal 16. When the pedal is depressed, the cam-disk 11 is partly rotated to disengage the dog 22 and permit the pawl 20 to engage the notched disk 10 to trip the cylinder. For drying the printed sheets, the cylinders g, g<1>, Fig. 1, carrying the delivery chains f are made hollow and are heated by hot fluid circulated by means of inlet and outlet pipes through the trunnions of the cylinders.
