Abstract

Caprolactam is produced by heating #- hydroxy-caproic acid or linear or cyclic oligomers thereof, having a degree of polymerization of from 2 to 10, with an aqueous solution of ammonia, containing 0À1-50% by weight of ammonia, to 200‹ to 420‹ C. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and in an atmosphere of hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas, the mole ratio of ammonia to hydroxycaproic acid or its oligomers being from 1 : 1 to 25 : 1. Preferred catalysts contain nickel, cobalt or a noble metal. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously in a fixed bed, suspension, moving bed or fluidized bed.
