Abstract
1,051,618. Preparation of rare earth metal and / or thorium fluorides. TH. GOLDSCHMIDT A.-G. Sept. 3, 1963 [Oct. 9, 1963], No. 34827/63. Heading C1A. Rare earth metal and/or thorium fluorides are prepared by the direct reaction of an aqueous suspension of a difficultly soluble compound of a rare earth metal and/or thorium in an acidified aqueous medium with an alkaline earth metal fluoride which is more readily soluble than the rare earth metal and/or thorium fluoride. The difficultly soluble compound of the rare earth metal and/or thorium may be a naturally occurring ore and the alkaline earth metal fluoride is preferably the naturally occurring fluorspar. The reaction may be performed at a pH less than 4 and at a temperature between 60‹ and 100‹ C. Examples are given using bastnasite, and cerium oxide as starting materials.
