Abstract

1,051,601. Making heat exchangers; soldering. SOC. ANON. DES USINES CHAUSSON. Jan. 10, 1964 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 1325/64. Headings B3A and B3R. In making a heat exchanger a plurality of separate similar hollow metal elements are formed, external surface portions or the opposite sides of sheet means being coated with fusible material, the elements are mounted with their coated surface portions abutting one another or with the surface portions engaging opposite sides of the coated sheet means and the assembly is heated to melt the fusible material to form a heat exchanger having a plurality of passageways extending between collecting chambers. Light alloy, specially aluminium, sheets coated on one surface with a silicon-aluminium alloy are assembled with their uncoated surfaces adjacent, a stop weld e.g. ink being provided in a pattern between the surfaces, and the sheets are rolled to effect bonding. The sheets are then inflated to provide fluid conduits of the same or different shape therein and collecting chambers. In an embodiment such chambers 6, Fig. 1 (not shown), having holes 7 therein drilled before or after inflation are assembled with the edges about the holes projecting outwardly somewhat and with the solder coatings in contact corrugated sheets 9 are arranged between the elements, the parts are clamped to distort the projections to the shape shown in Fig. 1 and the assembly is heated in a furnace. Tongues which may extend all around the holes may be provided on the edges of the holes 7 to be bent over and hold the parts assembled for soldering. In a modification the sheets forming the bonded elements are not solder coated but both sides of a sheet 9, Fig. 8 (not shown), having a corrugated portion are solder coated and the flat portion 11 of the sheet between the elements has a hole 7a and tongues 10a which are bent over to temporarily connect the parts. In further modifications the walls of the conduits are formed with projections and as shown in Fig. 13 (not shown) the corrugated inner sheet is dispensed with, the projections 12a1 forming overlapping gills. The projections may have flat surfaces covered with flux to bear against the flat inner sheet which is coated with solder on both surfaces. If the elements only have inflated tubes, the ends of the tubes may be expanded to receive tapered collars extending from a collector and the assembly is soldered as before.
