Abstract

1,051,588. Control of D.C. motors; supply systems. HARBOROUGH CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Aug. 28, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962]. No. 34370/62. Headings H2H and H2J. A number of batteries are adapted for seriesparallel connection each battery being in series with an individual rectifier in opposite branches forming a bridge circuit, and an on-off switch is connected across the bridge to opposite poles of the batteries. Closure of the switch connects the batteries in series, the rectifiers preventing short-circuiting of the batteries in the seriesconnection. As shown, batteries B, C, each have half the voltage of batteries A, D, and are connected to supply motor M. Closure of switch 2 connects batteries B, C, in series and their sum in parallel with batteries A, D. When switches 1, 3 are closed and switch 2 is opened, the motor is supplied with a half of the total battery voltage. When switches 1, 2, 3 are closed, the motor is supplied with the total battery voltage. The range of the system may be extended, the rectifiers preventing reverse current through the smaller batteries when they are arranged in parallel with the larger. The circuit may be modified so that the other batteries are connected in parallel with the battery A one after another, the rectifiers R1 preventing short-circuiting of the batteries. In another arrangement, closure of switch 1 connects batteries A, B, in parallel and motors M1 M2, in series. Closure of switch 2 arranges the motors in parallel with their field windings F1, F2, in series, whilst, when switches 2, 3 are closed, both the field windings and the armatures of the motors are in parallel. Closure of switch 4 connects the batteries A, B, in series. The on-off switches may be replaced by siliconcontrolled rectifiers, resistors, or chokes.
