Abstract
Conjugated diolefins are obtained by pyrolysing propylene dimer formed in the presence of an organo-aluminium compound and a nickel salt of a carboxylic acid dissolved in an inert solvent at - 50 to 100 DEG C. and 0-50 kg./cm.2. The preferred aluminium compound is of the formula RAlX2 or R2AlX, where R is alkyl and X chlorine or bromine. Suitable nickel salts are the oleate, stearate, naphthenate, benzoate and ditert-butyl benzoate. Specified solvents are heptane, isooctane, benzene, toluene, tertbutylbenzene, 2 - methyl - 2 - pentene, propylene tetramer and decalin. Preferably 0.5-40% mol. based on dimer of carbon tetrachloride is added to the pyrolysis process. If desired 4-methylpentene-2 may be separated and pyrolysed separately from the remainder mainly comprised of n-hexenes and 2-methylpentene-2. The latter fraction yields butadiene and piperylene in addition to isoprene. ALSO: A catalyst for dimerizing propylene comprises an organo-aluminium compound and a nickel salt of a carboxylic acid dissolved in an inert solvent. The preferred aluminium compound is of the formula RALX2 or R2ALX where R is alkyl and X chlorine or bromine. Suitable nickel salts are the oleate, stearate, naphthenate, benzoate and ditert-butyl benzoate. Specified solvents are heptane, isooctane, benzene, toluene, tert-butylbenzene, 2-methyl-2-pentene, propylene tetramer and decalin.
