Abstract

1,051,553. Positive clutches. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. March 11, 1964 [March 13, 1963], No. 10255/64. Heading F2C. Synchronized engagement of positive clutch teeth 5 or 6 on axial sliding of a toothed hub 7 from its neutral position in a change-speed gear for motor vehicles is effected by the hub first frictionally engaging an outer split ring, e.g. the ring 8, which contains at least one other split ring 10, 11, effective to increase the self-servo engagement of the parts. Each of the inner split rings 10, 11 has lugs 14, 17, Fig. 2 (not shown), at its two ends. The lugs 14 project radially butwards, and lie freely within the slot 15 between the ends of the outer split ring 8. The lugs 17 project radially inwards, and lie freely within axial slots 18 or 19 formed in the hubs 3<SP>1</SP>of the positive clutch members. The inner split rings 10 are oppositely arranged, in the rotational sense, to the inner split rings 11. On axial sliding of the toothed hub 7 to establish a ratio, end surfaces 23, 24 on the lugs 14, 17 engage the end of the slot 15 in the outer split ring 8 and one side of the slot 18 or 19 in the hub 3<SP>1</SP>, distorting the inner split ring 10 so that it wedges the outer ring firmly against the toothed hub. The inner rings 10, 11 may be provided in pairs or singly, and may be manufactured by stamping from sheet metal. The inner rings 10, 11 may be of substantially constant thickness when viewed axially, Fig. 2 (not shown), or may be of varying thickness, Fig. 4 (not shown).
