A device for extracting silage from the bottom of a silo 1, Fig. 1, having a sloping floor 2 leading to a central extraction opening 3 comprises a cutting arm 6 equipped with a tool carrying chain and mounted for rotation about the axis 8 of the silo on a circular member 15, the arm 6 being driven through the opening 3 by a motor 19 mounted for rotation with the arm or a motor 25 fixed on a wall 26 of the silo. The member 15 is rotatably supported on a ring 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), secured round the opening 3 and carries a plate 18 on which is supported a gear 22 having its output shaft 23 connected by a universal joint 24 to the drive sprocket 9 of the chain and its input shaft driven through a chain drive 21 from the motor 19 or through chain drives 27, 28 from the motor 25. The shaft 23 carries a cam 29, Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown), which co-operates with a roller 30 on a spring-loaded lever 32 to oscillate the latter and so operate a unidirectional drive wheel 33 which intermittently drives a gear-wheel 35 meshing with a fixed ring rack 38 for rotation of the arm 6. The movement of the lever 32 is adjustably controlled by a set-screw stop 39. To reverse the direction of rotation of the arm 6 the lever 32 is disposed to correspond with the broken line 32A. A hopper 40 is releasably secured to the member 15 and has an aperture 44 therein closable by a flap 43. The arm 6 may be inserted or withdrawn longitudinally through the opening 3.
