Abstract

1,050,985. Clay treatment. MINERAL INDUSTRIES CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 18, 1964, No. 6677/64. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B2] Clay particles are treated by forcing a liquid flowable slurry, having a clay concentration not substantially less than 30% by weight in the form of a thin film edgewise through a thin hard surfaced gap, under a high pressure (e.g. at least 100 p.s.i.) and at a high velocity obtained by pressure reduction through the gap. A yieldable force may be applied to the gap which is opened by the high pressure. The discharge may be directed against a hard impact surface. The slurry may be subjected to a plurality of passes through the apparatus or through several apparatuses in series. A deflocculating agent, e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate may be present in the slurry. The treatment serves to reduce the size of the clay particles and also increases the dilatancy point, i.e. that solids concentration above which the slurry ceases to be thixotropic. The apparatus of Specification 987,176 may be used and the drawings (not shown) illustrate another form of apparatus (see Division B2).
