Abstract
1,050,921. Photographic type-composing machines. MONOTYPE CORPORATION Ltd. and D. C. GOODALL. June 21, 1963 [July 4, 1962], No. 25664/62. Heading B6W. Light from a source 11 passes through a movable matrix case 13, an optical member 23, prisms 16, a lens 15, and a mirror 17, 17 traversed stepwise, to a photosensitive surface 18 on a drum 19. The member 23 is tiltable in response to a " shift " signal in the controlling record tape so as to shift the character image downwards on the surface 18. A matrix for a " superior " character is used with the " shift " signal to expose the corresponding " inferior " character. The member 23 is tilted by a pneumatic piston acting on an arm 27. To expose " superior " and " inferior " characters in the same vertical line, a " double expose " signal is used which after the " shift " exposure, prevents the normal movement of the mirror 17 until the normal exposure has been made.
