A conveyer of the kind including a plurality of material engaging elements, attached to a bar, adapted to be reciprocated in a trough so as to advance material in one direction of their movement and to ride over it in the other direction is characterized by means for coupling to the bar, at any desired interval, the material engaging elements. The coupling means may be a two-part clamp 18, 19 with a material engaging element 21. including a fork 22, pivoted to the lower part 19 with a suitable stop (not shown). The conveyer may be driven by a rotary element (Figs. 1, 3, not shown) or by a piston and cylinder drive (not shown). The trough may be relatively narrow at the bottom and the element 21 may carry a blade (not shown) below the fork 22 and pivoted to it.
