Abstract

Foaming in water-circulating systems e.g. for washing air, is inhibited by the addition of a quantity, e.g. 1-20 p.p.m. of a compound of formula:- <FORM:1050747/B1-B2/1> where n is an integer greater than 1 (preferably 2-50) R1 is alkyl (preferably C8-C24) and R2 and R3 are alkyl (preferably C1-C24) or hyrogen. The compound may be added as a briquette comprising a builder (Na2SO4 or soda ash) and optionally also a biocide (alkyl dimethyl aryl ammonium halides, sodium chlorophenates), corrosion inhibitor (sodium or potassium chromate, sodium dichromate) and scale inhibitor (molecularly dehydrated monovalent or combined mono-and polyvalent metal phosphate).
