Abstract

1,050,642. Polyesters, foamed polyurethanes. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Jan. 8, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 922/64. Headings C3C and C3R. A polyester containing OH groups is derived from a polyhydric alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid obtained by reacting a cracked petroleum fraction with an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. The cracked petroleum fraction may contain saturated hydrocarbons, olefines, dienes, cyclohexene, and cyclopentadienes and may have a density of 0À76-0À81 g./ml., a boiling range between 40‹ and 200‹ C. and a bromine number of 50-80 g./100 ml. Unsaturated acids and anhydrides specified are maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic and methylene malonic acids and maleic anhydride. The addition reaction may be at 130-250‹ C. and optionally at superatmospheric pressure. If free radical initiators are present, e.g. dicumene and cumyl-tert.-butyl peroxides and azodiisobutyronitrile, the unsaturated carboxylic acids are simultaneously polymerized. Polyols specified for polyester formation are: mono-, di- and tri-ethylene glycol, propane-1,2-diol, butane diol, hexane diol, hexane triol, trimethylol propane monoallyl ether and their ethoxylation and propoxylation products. Other dicarboxylic acids may also be used, e.g. adipic, isophthalic and terephthalic acids and phthalic anhydride. The polyesters should have an OH number of 40-600 and an acid number below 50. Polyurethanes may be produced by reacting, the polyesters with polyisocyanates, e.g. tolylene diisocyanate, m- and p-phenylene diisocyanate, diphenyl-methane diisocyanate and adducts of tolylene diisocyanate with trimethylol propane and hexamethylene diisocyanate and diphenyl methane diisocyanate with water. Masked isocyanates can also be used. Other reactants which may be present are: blowing agents, e.g. water, and low boiling organic solvents such as CCl 3 F, polyamines, alkanolamines, e.g. tetrapropoxylated ethylene diamine, polyols, other polyesters and polyethers. The reaction may be in one or more steps. The products may be used as lacquers or may be moulded. In examples the following materials are also present during polyurethane formation: a polysiloxane/ polyalkylene glycol copolymer, permethylated N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-aminoethyl piperazine, and a 50% aqueous solution of sodium castor oil sulphonate.
