Any inoperative burner of a plurality of burners 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP>, 1<SP>111</SP>, Fig. 1 (not shown), of a furnace is cooled by smoke from the furnace. A flap valve 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>, 3<SP>111</SP> is associated with each burner to cut off, except for leakage, the supply of combustion air when the burner is put out of action, and a further air valve 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>111</SP> shuts off the corresponding air duct leading to the burner. Ducts 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP>, 7<SP>111</SP> controlled by stopvalves 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>11</SP>, 8<SP>111</SP> supply smoke downstream of the air valves 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>111</SP>. The smoke is raised to a pressure higher than the combustion air pressure by a fan 11 and a constant pressure difference between the smoke and the air is maintained by a butterfly valve 131 disposed upstream of the fan and operated by a servomotor 13. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), all the burners are disposed in a common windbox but are provided with separate air inlet boxes 20 having inlet valves.
