Abstract

1,050,339. Educational appliances. G. W. G. MONTGOMERY. Oct. 20, 1964 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 43194/63. Heading G5G. A teaching device of the question and answer t ype comprises a casing having mounted therein a rotatable teaching programme carrier which supports a plurality of frames adapted to present a series of questions and answers in accordance with the previously selected answer and including a plurality of switches the selection of which makes the choice. In a preferred embodiment the teaching programme carrier comprises an endless belt 40, Fig. 9, which is trained about rollers 46, 42, the front run of which is adjacent apertures 27-33, Fig. 7, which apertures coincide with the frames on the endless belt 40. In front of the apertures is an inclined non-reflecting panel 35, and below on the dais of the apparatus is a push button 13, a multi-position electric switch 23 and a push button 22 for a buzzer. On one side of the apparatus is a ratchet mechanism 37 which is operated by a handle 38 to advance the endless programme belt 40 in step-by-step fashion. In operation the push button 13 is first of all depressed to eliminate one of the apertures 27-33 and if the eliminated frame corresponds to a question, which is associated with a number of codes each one of which represents an answer he selects an answer which he considers to be correct and uses the code opposite that answer to rotate the multipleselection switch 23, and depresses switch 13, to eliminate the appropriate aperture 27-33. If his answer was correct he is promoted to the next, more difficult question but if his answer was incorrect is denoted to an easier question. In another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the endless programme carrier 40 is replaced by a drum 43. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the endless programme carrier 40 is replaced by a disc 45 inserted into the apparatus through a slot 25 and supported in the apparatus on freely rotatable rollers 36, Fig. 4 (not shown). The apertures 27-33 may be covered by translucent panels or the apertures may be opened on depression of the switch 13 by electromagnetically operated flaps 92, Fig. 17 (not shown).
