Abstract
1,050,308. Organosilicon compounds. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. May 14, 1965 [May 14, 19641, No. 20468/65. Headings C3S and C3T. A hydroxyalkyl -silicon compound is made by reacting an organosilicon compound, which is a silane of the formula or a linear or heterocyclic compound of the general formula wherein each X is an alkoxy or aroxy radical or a halogen atom, each R<SP>1</SP> is X or an alkyl, aryl, cyanoalkyl, cyanoaryl or inertly substituted-alkyl or -aryl radical, each R is a carboxy-, carbalkoxy-, halocarboxy-, carboxycyano- or carbalkoxycyano-alkyl radical, at least one Y in each molecule is a bivalent -CH 2 -R<SP>11</SP>- CH 2 - radical bonded to 2 Si atoms, and the other Y substituents when present are bivalent oxygen atoms forming siloxane linkages, R<SP>11</SP> is a carboxy-, carbalkoxy-, halocarboxy-, carboxycyano- or carbalkoxycyano-alkylene radical, a is not greater than 1, and n is greater than 1 but does not exceed 3, at a temperature between 0‹ and 200‹ C., with a borohydride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, and in those cases where none of the substituents X contains halogen and simultaneously none of the substituents R and R<SP>11</SP> contains an acyl group, additionally with a boron halide, solvolyzing the primary product by the addition of water, a dilute acid or an alcohol and recovering the end product. The initial and final organosilicon compounds may be silanes, siloxanes, silcarbane-siloxanes or cyclic compounds. The preferred reducing agent is sodium borohydride with or without BF 3 , preferably complexed with an ether. The reaction can be effected in a solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran or the dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol. In the examples the following products are obtained by the above process: (1) 1,3 - bis - (8 - hydroxybutyl) - tetramethyl disiloxane; (2) a methyl siloxane containing Si-bonded hydroxypropyl radicals; (3) a siloxane-silcarbane copolymer in which the silcarbane segments contain -OH and -NH 2 groups; (4, 5, 6 and 7) 4-aminomethyl-4- hydroxymethyl - 2,2,6,6 - tetramethyl - 1 - oxa - 2,6-disilacyclohexane
