Abstract
1,050,213. Ice-cream soda &c. GENERAL FOODS CORPORATION. June 11, 1965 [June 12, 1964 (2); Nov. 16, 1964], No. 24879/65. Heading A2B. A frozen confection suitable for mixing with an aqueous liquid to produce a beverage such as ice-cream soda, comprises a frozen body capable of melting and of producing carbonation of the liquid upon mixing therewith, and a frozen dessert body, A preferred package, see Fig. 4, consists of a cylinder of ice cream, frozen flavoured syrup covering at least 75% of the area of the side surface of the icecream cylinder (but neither of the end surfaces) and a briquette of carbonated ice adhered to the cylinder of ice-cream. The contents are assembled by disposing a cylinder of ice-cream, having a specific gravity of less than that of the syrup, in a container containing liquid syrup, locating a block of carbonated ice on the cylinder of ice-cream and freezing the syrup to maintain it in its displaced position. The container may be circular, rectangular, pentagonal, hexagonal or of irregular shape in cross-section. In an alternative construction the frozen body consists of a frozen acid solution (providing hydrogen ions) and a frozen base solution (carbonate or bicarbonate) separated by a frozen dessert body, such that carbon dioxide is produced upon melting of the frozen bodies in water. The hydrogen ions may be derived from citric, tartaric, adipic, fumaric and hydrochloric acids or their water soluble salts, and glucose delta lactone. The frozen dessert body serves to keep the frozen bodies, which are lower density, submerged in the aqueous liquid. The frozen bodies may include flavouring syrups and foaming agents (milk protein). The aqueous liquid may be water, soda water, a carbonated soft drink beverage, milk or skim milk. Many frozen desserts, syrups, flavourings and packaging materials are particularly mentioned.
