Abstract

1,050,188. Compressing and cooling air supply; exhaust gas turbine superchargers. SOCIETE D'EXPLOITATION DES MATERIELS HISPANOSUIZA. May 28, 1965 [June 9, 1964], No. 22780/65. Headings F1B and F1G. Combustion air from exhaust-driven superchargers 1-2 and 3-4 is further compressed in a compressor 7 and then [drives] expanded through a turbine 9, which in turn drives the compressor 7, before passing to a diesel engine M. The air is cooled in heat exchanges 5, 6 and 8. The exhaust gases are reheated in a combustion chamber 10 between superchargers. Fuel fed to the combustion chamber 10 from the engine fuel tank T is controlled by a valve 12 so that the ratio of the pressure of the air entering the engine to that of the exhaust gases leaving it is sufficient to ensure efficient scavenging. A valve 14 enables compressor 7, heat exchange 8 and turbine 9 to be by-passed. Should the pressure of the air leaving turbine 9 fall below atmospheric, a valve 15 automatically opens to supply air directly from the atmosphere to the engine.
