In a roller bit having projecting nozzles 8 the outer surfaces of the nozzles are protected from wear. The protection 11 may comprise a U-shaped member 15 (Fig. 3, not shown) having a wear resistant layer 16, a U-shaped member having wear resistant inserts, a wear resistant layer, or wear resistant inserts.
