Abstract

2,3-, 2,6- and 2,7-dimethylnaphthalenes (DMN) are obtained from a hydrodesulphurized gas oil aromatic concentrate containing aromatics boiling in the range 500-520 DEG F. are obtained by (1) distilling to obtain fractions boiling in the ranges (a) 500-509 DEG F., (b) 509-513 DEG F. and (c) 513-520 DEG F.; (2) cooling fraction (a) to crystallize 2,6- and 2,7-DMN and separating the filtrate; (3) cooling fraction (c) to crystallize 2,3-DMN and separating the filtrate and (4) isomerizing fraction (b) and the filtrates from (2) and (3) and recycling the product to step (1). Preferably, to avoid build-up of 1,2-DMN which is not isomerized, part of the filtrate from step (3) is bled off and may be dealkylated together with 400-500 DEG F., boiling material from the gas oil to obtain naphthalene. The crystals from step (2) may be partially melted leaving crystallized 2,6-DMN and a filtrate containing 2,7-DMN which may be further crystallized and partially melted.
