Abstract

104,930. Hansen, C. March 25, 1916. Percussive drills. - In a percussive rock drill having water-supplying means, annular flexible packing is inserted between the anvil block and its guide and is so constructed that the water passes through it, and by its pressure causes the packing to form a watertight joint between the anvil block and its guide. In one form, a flexible packing-ring shown in crosssection in Fig. 4, and provided with an annular slot 16, an outer annular recess 13, a ring of holes 15, and an inner annular recess 14, is inserted in an annular recess 11, Fig. 2, in the bore of the guide 3 of the anvil block 4. The block 4 is provided with two annular grooves 24, 25 connected by grooves 26, and the grooves 24 communicate through two rearwardly inclined holes 21, 22, and an axial hole 23 with a longitudinal hole 7 through the bit. Water is supplied through a pipe 19, a strainer 20, and a passage 17 to the bottom of the recess 11, and thence passes through the recesses 13, 14, Fig. 4, in the packing-ring, and through the holes 21, 22, 23 to the bit. The cross-sectional area of the passage 17 is preferably made greater than that of the two holes 21, 22 combined. Fig. 6 shows, in cross-section, a leather or like packing-ring having holes 27 in its inner side communicating with a bevelled recess 28 in its outer side.
