Abstract

1,049,174. Web coating apparatus. ILFORD Ltd. April 6, 1965 [April 8, 1964], No. 14523/64, Addition to 957, 743. Heading D1L. In a method of applying thin layers of coating liquid to a travelling web the web 8 is caused to travel in a path which at the position the coating is applied has a vertical component of motion and coating liquid is applied by an applicator 1. The latter consists of a first supply duct 2 extending substantially across the width of the web and having jaws 5 and 7 shaped so as to establish, in operation, a body 11 of coating liquid between the duct and the web having a vertical depth of between 12 m.m. and 40 m.m. whereby the pressure in the liquid just below the upper jaw is less than that just above it, and above the upper jaw of the first duct one or more additional ducts 3, 4 extending substantially across the width of the web.
