Abstract

Aromatic acids, anhydrides, esters or quinones having melting-point over 120 DEG C and atmospheric boiling-point over 200 DEG C are purified by dissolving the impure compound in a chlorinated biphenyl solvent with a boiling-point from 275 DEG to 375 DEG C., distilling the solution (under reduced pressure, if necessary) so that the compound and solvent distil over while high-boiling impurities remain in the still, condensing the vapours, and cooling the condensate so that the purified compound separates in the solid state from the solvent. The following compounds may be purified by this process:-phthalic anhydride, terephthalic acid, dimethyl terephthalate, anthraquinone, 2, 3- and 1, 8-naphthalic anhydrides, 2, 6-naphthalene dicarboxy dimethyl ester, acenaphthene quinone, beta naphthoic acid, and phenanthrenequinone. The process may be carried out in two flasks, one of which is provided with an external heating mantle, p while the other is exposed to the atmosphere and serves as a condenser-receiver. The flasks are connected by an electrically-heated pipe for the vapour.
