Abstract

A fuel composition comprises a major amount of hydrocarbon fuel of the gasoline boiling range and minor amount of an at least partial neutralization product of (A) a partially esterified orthophosphoric acid and (B) a partially acylated polyalkylene polyamine which is prepared by reacting an organic carboxylic acid with at least an equivalent amount of a polyalkylene polyamine at 100-350 DEG C. and removing the water formed thereby, the neutralization product having a neutralization number of 0-125 mg. of KOH per g. at pH 12 and being formed by reacting (A) and (B) at below 100 DEG C. The acylated polyalkylene polamine may be reacted with 0.1-20% of a lower alkylene oxide. Reactant (A) may be a mixture of mono- and di-alkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl esters which may be substituted with chloro, fluoro, nitro, nitroso, sulphide, keto, ether or ester groups. The fuel may contain halo alkanes, triaryl phosphates and 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol.
