Abstract

Paper, particularly for use as a photographic support (see Division G2), is sized by applying to it an aqueous alkaline solution in which have been dissolved boric acid and a polymeric material. This material is a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride or a partial lower alkyl (up to four carbon atoms) ester of a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid, or a mixture of these copolymers. The solution may also contain a non-aldehydic cross-linking agent, e.g. a polyepoxide resin obtained by reacting epichlorohydrin with a polyhydric alcohol or polyhydric phenol. The solution may be ammoniacal.
