Abstract
104,805. Morris & Whitham, and Allison, J. A. June 21, 1916. Cutting glass.-In a machine for cutting off lengths of glass tubing for subsequent use in the production of stems for metallic-filament electric lamps, the tubes are passed through a hollow rotating shaft into contact with an adjustable stop and are gripped by a chuck, nicked by a cutter, and broken off. The machine comprises a number of units each of which is of the form shown in Fig. 1. A tubular shaft d through which the glass tube i is passed is rotated continuously by means of a pulley e, and carries at the lower end a spring- pressed sleeve h<2> and the jaws h of the chuck. An adjustable stop o for the lower end of the glass tube i is carried on the end of a C-shaped lever p mounted on a shaft p'. In operation, a length of glass tube is passed through the shaft d on to the stop o; a cam on the driving-shaft s allows the spring-pressed sleeve h<2> to rise and close the jaws h on the tube. A circular cutter u carried by a reciprocating bar u<2> advances and nicks the tube, and the lever p swings back, thus withdrawing the stop o and causing a block x carried by the lever to snap off the glass. The circular cutter is slightly rotated by ratchet gear after each cutting operation. The parts return to their initial positions, and the operations are repeated.
