Abstract

1,048,045. Inverting. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 22, 1963 [Sept. 4, 1962], No. 33924/62. Heading H2F. The Specification relates to pulse width modulated inverters having at least one pair of controlled rectifiers, arranged to conduct load current alternately, and reversely connected diodes across the controlled rectifiers. According to the invention a pair of inductively coupled windings are connected, the one in series with the controlled rectifier and the other in series with the corresponding diode. In the Figure, which shows a pulse width modulated inverter with commutating capacitors forming resonant circuits with the inductors, the windings T1PA and T1SA, in series with controlled rectifier SCR1 and diode D11 respectively, are also inductively coupled to windings T1PB and T1SB which are in series with the controlled rectifier SCR2, which conducts alternately with SCR1, and its corresponding reverse diode respectively. The arrangement is such that reverse current flowing in a diode and its associated winding induces in the winding associated with the controlled rectifier a voltage which aids turn off of the controlled rectifier. The load 5 may be a D.C. load, and the effective direct current through it is controlled by varying the mark-space ratio of the inverter.
