Abstract

Heavy petroleum oils containing pentane insoluble asphaltenes are hydrorefined in a process comprising mixing the oil with a substance having a thermally unstable metal co-ordination compound structure, said substance being selected from the carbonyls, betadiketone complexes, xanthate complexes, and the reaction product of the metal halide with an organic compound containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen as the sole elements thereof and selected from acids, anhydrides, esters, ethers, ketones and aldehydes, of a metal selected from vanadium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt, and nickel. The resulting mixture is heated to a temperature less than 310 DEG C. for a time sufficient to decompose the metal co-ordination compound and the colloidal suspension thus formed is reacted with hydrogen at a temperature in excess of 225 DEG C. and a pressure greater than 34 atmospheres, a hydrorefined liquid product being recovered. Prior to treatment with hydrogen, the suspension may be sulphided. From the hydrorefined product a catalyst-containing sludge may be separated which may be at least in part recycled to the reaction zone combined with fresh heavy petroleum.
