Abstract
1,047,527. Radio beam detecting apparatus; testing aerials. A. N. CLARK, D. J. GALLAGHER, and J. B. SUPPER. July 29, 1963 [July 31, 1962], No. 29394/62. Headings H4A and H4D. The position of a radio beam, for example an I.L.S. beam 8, Fig. 3, produced by a source 3 of known position, is determined by mounting an aerial 14, Fig. 4 (not shown) on top of a pneumatic telescopic mast 11, and varying the height of the aerial until the beam is detected. The mast is mounted on a movable trolley 19, so that the aerial may be moved in azimuth and range relative to the source. By such variation a three-dimensional picture of the beam may be built up. The height of the aerial may be measured by a thin wire 21 attached to the top of the mast and operating an instrument 20, at the foot of the mast, which may comprise a drum of suitable diameter coupled to a revolution counter. Alternatively a tape or wire measure may be attached to the top of the mast or the cable feeding the aerial may be marked off in length units. The mast is of a type described in Specification 965,544.
