[Also in Divisions A5, C1, C3 and H1] Phosphates which are sparingly soluble in water and substantially in the ortho form and which have an average particle size below 0.03 Á are added to liquids or pastes to which they are chemically inert as a thickening or dispersing agent. The cationic constituent(s) of the phosphates may be a divalent metal, e.g. Ca, or Al, or mixtures thereof. The MO: P 2 O 5 or M 2 O 3 : P 2 O 5 molar ratio of the phosphates (M being the cationic constituent) may range from 0.5: 1 to 3À5: 1. The liquids may be pure substances which are liquid at normal temperatures or mixtures thereof such as certain oils, solutions, dispersions, or emulsions. The term " pastes " includes certain paraffins, fats, soaps, waxes, bitumen, tar, and asphalt. The phosphates may be incorporated by kneading at normal temperatures into the pastes, or alternatively, the pastes may be heated above their softening points and the phosphates may then be incorporated therein. Examples relate to the addition of calcium orthophosphate having an average particle size of about 0À01 Á to engine oil SAE viscosity No. 1: 30, diesel oil, Stauffer grease (calcium stearate-containing grease), paraffins having m.pts. of 42-44‹ C., 55-60‹ C., and 62-72‹ C. respectively, carnauba wax, tar, and a white pigmented, air-drying lacquer. The phosphates are stated to be excellent delustring agents for lacquers and paints.
