Abstract

1,047,380. Hydraulic turbines and pumps. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Sept. 24, 1965 [Sept. 30, 1964], No. 40776/65. Heading FIT. A pumped storage hydro-electric power plant comprises a motor-generator 2 connected through a clutch 3 to a multi-stage main pump 4 and an auxiliary pump 5 having one or two stages. During pumping, a valve 8 in the pipe 7 is closed, and the auxiliary pump draws water from the lower reservoir 6 via pipes 7 and 9 and delivers it via pipes 11 and 7 to the main pump 4, which discharges it through a pipe 13. To change over to turbine operation, a valve 10 is closed and the valve 8 is opened. The water is then expelled from the auxiliary pump 5 by use of compressed air. During turbine operation, the auxiliary pump is shortcircuited and run in air; water from the pipe 13 drives the main pump 4 as a turbine and is discharged through pipe 7 to the lower reservoir 6. A starting or braking turbine, e.g., a Pelton wheel, may be provided between the pumps 4 and 5.
